HOUSTON (Diya TV) — Dr. C. Bob Basu has been elected president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), becoming the first South Asian to lead the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons in its 90-year history. His one-year term began on October 12, 2025, during the society’s annual scientific meeting in New Orleans.
The ASPS, with more than 11,000 members worldwide, represents board-certified plastic surgeons and sets the standard for safety, ethics, and education in the field. Dr. Basu’s appointment marks a milestone for representation and leadership among South Asians in American medicine.
Based in Houston, Texas, Dr. Basu is a nationally recognized leader in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He has performed more than 18,000 procedures throughout his career. As president, he plans to use technology and artificial intelligence to better serve ASPS members and strengthen patient education worldwide.
“Our mission is clear — to uphold the highest standards in education, ethics, training, research, and innovation while advancing public awareness about the value of plastic surgery performed by board-certified surgeons,” Dr. Basu said.
He added that as the demand for cosmetic and reconstructive surgery continues to grow, patient safety remains his top priority. “Our commitment to patient safety and exceptional outcomes has never been more crucial,” he said. “I look forward to strengthening ASPS’s role as the trusted global resource for reliable and balanced education across plastic surgery.”
Dr. Basu brings more than two decades of experience in organizational leadership to his new role. Before becoming president, he served as ASPS Vice President of Finance and Treasurer, guiding the organization through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and achieving four consecutive years of strong financial performance.
He has also chaired committees in health policy, advocacy, governance, membership, and education. His leadership has helped shape the society’s strategic direction and promote collaboration among surgeons worldwide.
Within the broader medical community, Dr. Basu represented plastic surgery in the American Medical Association, where he served as chair of the surgical section. His work in that role helped advance awareness of patient safety and ethical surgical practices.
Dr. Basu is the founder and managing director of Basu Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery, a leading Houston-based private practice specializing in aesthetic surgery of the face, breast, and body. His practice emphasizes personalized care, innovative techniques, and patient safety — values he now brings to his national leadership role.
He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Princeton University and completed a combined MD and MPH at the Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Basu then trained in general surgery at The George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his plastic surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine’s Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery.
He also holds a degree in Business Administration with a specialization in healthcare management from Brandeis University.
