PEARLAND, Texas (Diya TV) — Mantra Pearland celebrated Durga Pujo with a large turnout at the Orissa Cultural Center on Oct. 5. The event brought the local Indian community together to honor Goddess Durga with vibrant flowers, incense, and traditional rituals.
The celebration featured a mix of devotional activities, cultural performances, and community engagement. Attendees enjoyed the energy of the crowd as they participated in the prayers and rituals of the festival. The Orissa Cultural Center, known for its beautiful temple and community space, provided a perfect setting for the event.
Mantra Pearland is a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization dedicated to preserving Indian culture and traditions. Since its founding in 2024, it has become a central hub for cultural activities in Pearland. The group focuses on promoting Bengali heritage through festivals, cultural programs, and charitable initiatives.
Vrutant Shah, one of the main organizers, shared that the celebration started small. “We started not as a nonprofit, but just like a small ‘gali ka’ puja four years back,” Shah said. Over the years, the event has grown in both size and popularity.
The local Indian community in Pearland is smaller than in other parts of Texas, but the response to Durga Pujo has been enthusiastic. The festival initially featured a few food and art vendors but has since expanded to include a wide variety of activities and attractions. The growing crowds eventually led organizers to shift the event to a larger venue to accommodate more participants.
This year, Mantra Pearland added a new feature: a free medical camp. The camp offered a range of services, including dental checkups, blood pressure and lung capacity tests, blood tests, B12 injections, and consultations with local doctors and volunteers.
The camp aimed to support uninsured and underserved members of the community. It also provided visiting family members from India a safe and familiar environment to seek basic medical care. Many attendees stopped by the camp for a quick checkup before returning to the festivities.
Shah noted the community’s growing engagement. “It’s growing bigger and bigger, and now we’re trying to identify a space,” he said. “It’s a nice event. Durga Puja is, you know, a Bengali thing, but given the response from the community, we keep sensing an ‘everyone is united’ kind of feeling.”
The Orissa Cultural Center, located at 3101 Fuqua Street, opened in 2021. In addition to its temple and event space, the campus includes a dedicated ‘goshala’ for about twenty cows. The center blends cultural and traditional elements, making it a unique venue for celebrations and community gatherings.
The annual Durga Pujo at Mantra Pearland has become more than a religious celebration. It has evolved into a community event that combines culture, charity, and social interaction. The festival continues to strengthen the local Indian community while introducing wider audiences to Bengali traditions.
