MCALLEN, Texas (Diya TV) — A 19-year-old Texas man faces capital murder charges after authorities accused him of killing his father, mother, and grandmother inside their South Texas home in a case that has stunned the community of Alton.

Investigators say Gaurav Chopra fatally shot three family members on June 16 and then tried to kill his brother, who survived and called 911. Authorities later arrested Chopra after a police pursuit that ended in a crash.

The killings took place in the Tuscany Village subdivision in Alton, according to Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra.

Police responded to a 911 call at about 9:13 p.m. on June 16. The caller reported that his brother had killed members of their family and had left the home in a white Lexus.

As officers approached the gated neighborhood, they spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. However, authorities say Chopra refused to stop and led officers on a pursuit through the area.

The chase ended at the intersection of Four Mile Line Road and Glasscock Road. There, the Lexus crashed into two other vehicles. Officers then took Chopra into custody.

Meanwhile, officers arrived at the family residence and discovered a deadly scene on the second floor of the home.

Authorities found Kamlesh Rani, 46, and Minder Kaur, 73, dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers also found Sweeta Ram, 56, critically injured but still alive.

First responders immediately provided aid and transported Ram to a local hospital. However, he later died from his injuries.

Soon afterward, the Alton Police Department requested assistance from the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit. Detectives then took over the homicide investigation.

Investigators interviewed the surviving brother, who made the emergency call. As the investigation progressed, detectives gathered evidence that led them to conclude Chopra shot his father, mother, and grandmother inside the home.

Authorities also say Chopra attempted to kill his brother. According to investigators, he fired a shot at him but missed.

In addition, detectives recovered a 9mm handgun from inside the white Lexus. Investigators believe the firearm was used during the shootings.

Autopsies later confirmed that all three victims died from gunshot wounds to the head. The Hidalgo County Forensic Center ruled each death a homicide.

Furthermore, investigators collected surveillance footage that they say supports witness statements and documents Chopra’s actions after the shootings.

During a June 18 news conference, Guerra described the case as a triple homicide and said investigators continue to work to determine what led to the violence.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing,” Guerra said. “I’m not going to speculate on a motive, but investigators are looking into a possible motive.”

So far, authorities have not identified a motive for the killings. Investigators continue to examine all available evidence.

When reporters asked whether drugs may have played a role, Guerra said investigators do not believe narcotics contributed to the incident.

Chopra now faces a charge of Capital Murder of Multiple Persons under Texas law. He also faces a charge of Attempted Capital Murder related to the alleged attack on his brother.

Authorities are holding Chopra without bond on both charges. In addition, Alton police charged him with evading arrest following the pursuit. A judge set bond at $250,000 for that charge.

The pursuit also affected members of the public. According to Guerra, the crash involved two other vehicles. One person suffered injuries and went to a hospital. However, that individual has since been released.

Meanwhile, the Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting investigators with crash reconstruction related to the pursuit.
