SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — Ruby Rippey-Gibney, the former San Francisco City Hall aide whose affair with Gavin Newsom nearly derailed his political career when he was mayor, is set to tell her account of the relationship publicly for the first time in an upcoming Vanity Fair article, according to a New York Post report.

Rippey-Gibney worked as Newsom’s appointments secretary at San Francisco City Hall from February 2004 to August 2006. The two began an affair in 2005, while Newsom was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle and Rippey-Gibney was married to Alex Tourk, who at the time served as Newsom’s campaign manager and close friend. The affair became public in early 2007, prompting Tourk’s resignation from Newsom’s staff.

Newsom publicly acknowledged the affair and apologized at a news conference at the time. “I am deeply sorry,” he said. “I humbly ask all of those I have hurt for their forgiveness. I will not let my personal failures impact my public duties.” He attributed his conduct in part to alcohol use and said he intended to stop drinking, though he later told the Sacramento Bee in 2018 that he never underwent formal rehabilitation treatment, describing his approach instead as informal life coaching.

Rippey-Gibney took a leave of absence from her city job to be treated for alcoholism and resigned upon her return; she received continued pay during her leave under an arrangement in which several co-workers gave up their own paid time off so she could be compensated. Then-San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera reviewed the payment and found it did not violate any laws, though he noted his office could not identify another instance of an employee receiving similar approval for pay after announcing an intent to resign.

Rippey-Gibney has largely stayed out of public life in the years since. She later worked as director of corporate and franchise relations at 1-800-Radiator from 2008 to 2015 and currently works in content writing and management at Catch Marketing Services. She is married to Ryan Gibney and has two children.

The affair has periodically resurfaced in California political discourse, including during Newsom’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign and again amid unrelated controversies during his time as governor. Details of the planned Vanity Fair article, including its publication date and full contents, have not yet been released.
