SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Diya TV) — Silicon Valley investor Vinod Khosla and his family are preparing to take a major step into professional sports. The family has agreed to buy the Seattle Seahawks for $9.6 billion, pending approval from NFL owners. The deal would make Neeru Khosla the controlling owner, while their son, Neal Khosla, is expected to play a key leadership role in the ownership group.
The proposed purchase marks one of the biggest transactions in NFL history. It also expands the Khosla family’s growing presence in professional football. However, under NFL rules, the family will have to sell its minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers before completing the Seahawks deal.
Vinod Khosla, 71, ranks among the most influential venture capitalists in the technology industry. He built his reputation by investing early in companies that later became global leaders. His venture capital firm, Khosla Ventures, made one of the earliest major investments in OpenAI. The firm bought a 5% stake in 2019 for $50 million. Since then, OpenAI has grown into one of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies.
Khosla Ventures also backed several successful businesses, including Google, DoorDash, Instacart, Stripe and Impossible Foods. As a result, Khosla earned praise from many technology leaders. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff once described him as one of the top venture capitalists of his generation. Likewise, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison praised Khosla’s influence on Silicon Valley and innovation.
Khosla was born in India in 1955. His father served as an army officer. Even though he had no family ties to business or technology, he developed an interest in computers after reading about Intel as a teenager. That experience inspired him to pursue a career in technology.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi. Later, he moved to the United States in 1976 with a scholarship to Carnegie Mellon University. There, he completed a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. Afterward, he attended Stanford Graduate School of Business before launching his career in entrepreneurship.
In 1982, Khosla co-founded Sun Microsystems. The company later helped popularize the Java programming language, which became an important part of internet development. During his time at Sun, Khosla also hired future Google CEO Eric Schmidt. He later spent nearly two decades at venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins before starting Khosla Ventures in 2004.
Since then, Khosla Ventures has focused on artificial intelligence, clean energy, and other emerging technologies. The firm continues to invest in entrepreneurs developing new products and services. Earlier this year, Forbes ranked Khosla among America’s leading innovators.
Unlike many NFL owners, Khosla maintains a strong public profile. He frequently shares his views on technology and artificial intelligence through interviews and social media. He has also spoken openly about immigration, climate policy, and U.S. competition with China in AI. At times, he has publicly disagreed with Tesla CEO Elon Musk while remaining close to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Khosla has often described honesty as one of his guiding principles. He has said he values direct communication in both business and investing. Friends and colleagues also describe him as highly detail-oriented. Reports have noted that he personally selected design features at his firm’s headquarters and follows a disciplined daily routine.
Neeru Khosla brings a different background to the family’s leadership team. She worked as a molecular biologist before turning her attention to education and philanthropy. In 2007, she co-founded the nonprofit CK-12 Foundation. The organization provides free educational resources and textbooks while promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education for students around the world.
Meanwhile, Neal Khosla leads Curai Health, a virtual healthcare company that focuses on expanding access to medical care through technology. His expected leadership role with the Seahawks signals the family’s long-term commitment to the franchise.
Outside the technology world, Vinod Khosla also gained attention through a lengthy legal dispute over public beach access at his California property. Although the case attracted national interest, Khosla later said he regretted the controversy while continuing to defend property rights.
If NFL owners approve the sale, the Khosla family will become one of the league’s newest ownership groups. The purchase would also strengthen the growing connection between Silicon Valley’s technology leaders and professional sports while opening a new chapter for the Seattle Seahawks.
