CINCINNATI, Ohio (Diya TV) — Vivek Ramaswamy, a one-time head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and now a candidate for Ohio governor, continues to point out what he perceives as a slipping of American scholastic standards, advocating sweeping education reforms.
Despite opposition from within his party, Ramaswamy has continued to speak out about what he refers to as a “glorification of mediocrity” in America, especially in education. In a March 17 speech, he referenced international comparisons, stating that Chinese students are four years ahead of American students and Singaporean students are five years ahead. He also referenced National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) statistics, which indicate that 75% of eighth graders in America are not proficient in math.
“We can’t ignore the education achievement crisis any longer,” Ramaswamy said. “Closing down the failed U.S. Department of Education is a good start, but it’s ultimately going to be up to the states to solve the problem.” The comments follow the Department of Education having its funding drastically reduced under the Trump administration as part of a larger push to leave education policy up to individual states.
Ramaswamy has called for policies to solve what he perceives as the causes of deteriorating academic performance, such as a prohibition on cell phones in schools. He has also decried the use of H-1B visa workers in the technology sector, saying that the U.S. education system does not produce sufficient highly skilled engineers.
