WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Donald Trump has named longtime adviser Stephen Miller as his new White House chief of staff, replacing Susie Wiles in a major leadership shake-up following a difficult midterm election for Republicans. The decision signals that Trump plans to maintain his current political direction despite growing opposition from Democrats in Congress.
Trump announced the change Friday as his administration prepares for a new political landscape. Democrats made major gains in Tuesday’s midterm elections, securing control of both chambers of Congress. As a result, Trump now faces stronger congressional opposition and increased scrutiny of his administration.
The appointment of Miller, a leading figure behind Trump’s immigration policies, suggests the president has little interest in changing course or seeking major compromises with Democratic lawmakers.
Speaking to reporters as he left the White House, Trump said leadership changes sometimes become necessary.
“Sometimes in life you have to make moves,” Trump said. He also praised Miller’s political experience and loyalty, saying the adviser had worked with him since the beginning.
Wiles confirmed that Friday would mark her final day as chief of staff. She submitted her resignation Thursday night, according to a person familiar with the matter.
In a statement, Wiles described her time in the White House as the honor of a lifetime. She highlighted the administration’s work on border security, tax cuts and economic policies. Although her position will change, she said her commitment to Trump and his political mission would continue.
Miller, 41, currently serves as deputy White House chief of staff and homeland security adviser. He has played a central role in shaping Trump’s immigration agenda, including large-scale deportation operations and restrictions on legal immigration pathways.
His influence dates back to Trump’s first presidential term. As a senior policy adviser, Miller helped write major presidential speeches, including Trump’s 2017 inaugural address. He also helped develop several controversial policies, such as the travel ban and the separation of migrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border.
After Trump lost the 2020 election, Miller remained close to the former president. He later founded America First Legal, an organization that challenged corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion policies.
Now, his promotion gives one of Trump’s most influential advisers an even larger role in the administration.
However, the appointment has already drawn criticism from Democrats. Rep. Robert Garcia, who is expected to lead the House Oversight Committee in the next Congress, threatened to investigate Miller’s involvement in the administration’s immigration policies.
Garcia accused Trump of responding to the election results by strengthening his existing approach rather than addressing voters’ concerns.
Wiles, 69, became the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff. She held significant influence over West Wing operations and remained one of Trump’s most trusted political advisers.
Before joining the administration, she managed Trump’s successful 2024 presidential campaign. Her leadership helped control internal disagreements and maintain political coordination within his team.
Trump frequently praised her work and called her the “ice maiden.” He also credited her with bringing discipline to his political operation.
Nevertheless, Wiles faced growing criticism during her time in the White House. Questions about her influence emerged after disagreements surrounding staffing decisions and the brief appointment of Katie Zacharia as press secretary.
Additionally, scrutiny increased over political associates James Blair and Chris LaCivita, who faced questions about their work for the government of Republika Srpska.
Wiles also faced personal challenges. In March, she revealed an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis. However, she continued working while receiving treatment. By September, she announced that she was cancer-free.
Wiles’ departure comes at a difficult moment for the Trump administration. Democrats now control both chambers of Congress and have promised stronger oversight of federal agencies, administration policies, and Trump’s family business interests.
The president must also manage disagreements within his political circle while preparing for the final years of his term.
Meanwhile, Wiles’ future role in Trump’s political operation remains an important part of the transition. Her experience managing campaigns could help the president maintain his political network outside the White House.
Her departure also follows months of public attention surrounding her comments about senior administration figures. In a December interview published by Vanity Fair, Wiles offered candid assessments of Vice President JD Vance, Elon Musk, and Trump himself.
