SAN CARLOS, Calif. (Diya TV) — Indian-origin Pranita Venkatesh was sworn in as the Mayor of San Carlos, California on December 8th. Venkatesh is a member of the Indo-Fijian diaspora and becomes one of the youngest mayors in city history and the first leader of South Asian heritage to hold the position.
Her unanimous appointment at the San Carlos City Council Reorganization Ceremony highlights her growing influence in local politics and her strong connection with the community.
Born in Fiji to Indian parents, Venkatesh moved to California with her family at the age of four. She has lived in San Carlos for the past 15 years. Her early years in Fiji and her move to the United States shaped her global perspective and commitment to community service. Venkatesh earned a bachelor’s degree from Notre Dame de Namur University and a master’s degree in Early Childhood and Clinical Psychology. Before entering local politics, she worked as a child psychologist in East Palo Alto. She also held a role as a buyer at Macy’s, giving her experience in business and management.
Venkatesh’s engagement in San Carlos began long before her election to the city council. She served three years on the San Carlos Economic Development Advisory Commission. In 2022, she won a seat on the San Carlos City Council, further establishing her commitment to the city’s growth and development.
Since moving to San Carlos in 2009 with her husband and two children, Venkatesh has been a strong advocate for early childhood education. She owns and operates a Montessori preschool in the city. Her work reflects her dedication to creating a nurturing and educational environment for children.
Venkatesh was officially sworn in as Mayor during the City Hall Council Chambers ceremony. The event also featured the swearing-in of Vice Mayor Adam Rak and a tribute to outgoing Mayor Sara McDowell for her service during San Carlos’ centennial year. The City of San Carlos shared highlights of the ceremony on its official social media page, emphasizing the city’s pride in its new leadership.
“This is a significant moment for San Carlos,” Venkatesh said in a statement following her swearing-in. “I look forward to serving the community and working alongside my fellow council members to make our city an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.”
As mayor, Venkatesh plans to continue her focus on education, family support, and community development. Her background in psychology and early childhood education positions her to address issues that affect families and children in the city. Her leadership also reflects the growing representation of South Asian Americans in U.S. local government.
