WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has raised concerns about the growing concentration of power in the artificial intelligence industry. He said a small group of companies should not control the future of a technology that is rapidly changing businesses, jobs, and economies around the world.
Speaking in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Nadella outlined his vision for the next stage of AI development. He called for lower-cost AI models, greater user choice, and wider access to the technology. At the same time, he urged the industry to focus on practical benefits rather than fear-driven predictions.
His comments come as technology companies continue to invest heavily in AI infrastructure. Major firms are spending billions of dollars on data centers, advanced chips, and computing systems to support growing demand for AI services. As a result, policymakers, businesses, and workers have increased discussions about AI’s impact on employment, competition, and economic growth.
Nadella challenged the idea that AI will automatically eliminate large numbers of white-collar jobs. Instead, he argued that organizations should focus on reshaping work and helping employees adapt to new tools.
“You can’t say, hey, all white-collar jobs are gone, and this could even be a weapon, and we will use all the power to build data centers,” Nadella said.
He stressed that businesses should approach AI as a tool that improves productivity rather than one that simply replaces workers. According to Nadella, companies can use AI to help employees perform tasks more efficiently and make better decisions.
When discussing the future of work, Nadella acknowledged that AI-driven changes will create challenges. However, he said businesses can manage the transition through planning, training, and support programs.
“No, how about we think about reorganizing the jobs?” he said.
He added that companies must prepare for significant workplace changes. Yet he emphasized that workers can adapt when employers create clear paths for learning new skills and taking on different responsibilities.
“Yes, it’s a lot of change management, it’s a lot of displacement, but there is a path,” Nadella said.
Furthermore, Nadella described AI as a powerful knowledge engine that can help organizations make better use of information, technology, and human talent. He said businesses should have access to multiple AI models that offer different capabilities and pricing options.
His remarks also addressed concerns about competition within the AI sector. Currently, a handful of major technology companies dominate the development of advanced AI systems. Critics argue that this concentration of power could limit innovation and reduce choices for consumers and businesses.
Nadella suggested that a more open and competitive AI market would benefit users. He said organizations should not depend on a single AI provider. Instead, they should have the flexibility to choose from a variety of models that meet their specific needs.
In addition, Nadella spoke about the importance of public trust. As AI becomes more integrated into daily life, many people remain concerned about issues such as job security, privacy, and the responsible use of technology.
He said the industry must earn public confidence through actions rather than promises.
“No amount of just narrative is going to do it because where we are now, we have to sort of walk the walk,” Nadella said. “We now have to do the hard work of earning the social permission.”
