This 44 year old reveals details about the spat with Kareena Kapoor, when they had a fallout in 2002. “My first problem was with Kareena. She asked for too much money and we had some kind of a fallout at that time. Kapoor had asked for equal pay as Shahrukh Khan for the movie ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ the male lead in the movie. This did not sit well with the young Johar who has always had a fascination with Shahrukh and wage equality was a mere mirage in the Indian entertainment industry.

Having had a rough phase with his friendship with Kareena, he continues to narrate as to how he signs up with the bubbly actress Preity Zinta. “I was very hurt. I told my father, ‘Leave that negotiation room’ and I called her. She didn’t take my call, and I said, ‘We’re not taking her.’ And signed Preity Zinta instead. Kareena and I didn’t speak to each other for almost a year.

“For a year, we looked through each other at parties. It was very idiotic. She was a kid; she’s a decade younger than me”, Karan added.

Karan writing, “We were releasing ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho‘ in November. We had shot the film in June, July, August and in September I had to shoot the songs, make the promos and so on.

When Yash Chopra had ailing health, Johar had to head back, to New York as his father (Chopra) received the treatment. That was the time  Kapoor called Johar. It was August. They had not spoken for nine months. She called and said, ‘I heard about Yash uncle.’ She got really emotional on the phone, and she said, ‘I love you and I am so sorry I haven’t been in touch to which Johar replied Don’t worry’.”The hatchet had been buried.

Putting their pasts behind, these two superstars have remained good friends since then. Today, they’ve had many projects together including Bombay Talkies, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, We Are Family  and Gori Tere Pyaar Mein.
