NEW YORK (Diya TV) – New York State Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar officially announced her run for comptroller of New York City.

Rajkumar, a Democrat from Queens, made the announcement in a video posted to X with the launch of her campaign website.

“I’m in it for the New Yorkers who toil 25 hours a day, eight days a week, and can’t afford life-saving health care or quality education,” Rajkumar says in the campaign clip. “Government inefficiency costs lives.”

Incumbent Comptroller Brad Lander recently announced he would be challenging New York Mayor Eric Adams in next year’s Democratic mayoral primary.

Rajkumar will likely face off against Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine.

After the announcement of her campaign, Rajkumar made a statement about her potential in the role. “Traditionally, the comptroller is a man in an office crunching numbers, but I will make it so much more.”

The daughter of immigrants, Rajkumar was the first Indian American woman to be elected to a state office in New York. She is a graduate of Stanford Law School and has widespread legislative achievements. In 2023, she passed two landmark bills that established New York State’s first-ever Asian American & Pacific Island (AAPI) Commission and marked Diwali as a New York City school holiday.
