WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Kevin Negandhi, an Indian-American sports anchor for ESPN, has been selected to host this year’s edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, becoming the first Indian-origin presenter of the 89th competition.

The spelling bee has produced eight consecutive years of Indian-American champions, and 13 of the last 17 since the South Asian run for the title began in 1999.

Negandhi’s parents migrated to the states from Mumbai, and raised the anchor in Philadelphia, where he was introduced to the industry during his time at the Philadelphia Inquirer and USA TODAY. In 1998, he became the country’s second Indian-American to become a local sports anchor, serving as KTVO-TV’s anchor and later sports director from 1998-99.
