SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — India’s Department of Post on Saturday revealed its newest stamp, which features Olympic gymnast Dipa Karmakar, she and her coach Bishweshwar Nandi were present at the ceremony in Agartala.
“I express my gratitude to the postal department for choosing me for their special issue,” Karmakar said at the event. “I also express my heartiest regard to my coach and people of Tripura for supporting me in my journey. I will try my best to meet up people’s expectation in future.”
Karmakar was selected for the honor after her efforts at the Rio Olympics, where she became the first gymnast in the country’s history to compete. She ultimately finished fourth. Previously, Karmakar became the first Indian women’s gymnast to medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. She is best known for her signature and death defying Produnova vault.
“Stamp collection is one of the ancient hobbies which everybody possesses in any phase of life. We have chosen Dipa in our special cover so that children willing to become sportsperson get inspiration from her,” India’s Department of Post said.
