MUMBAI, India (Diya TV) — Indian American stand-up comedian Zarna Garg recently met Indian comedy legend Johny Lever during her trip to India, calling the experience “FIRE” in a heartfelt Instagram post.
Garg, known for her clean comedy centered on Indian culture, immigrant parenting, and family life, shared photos of her meeting with Lever on social media. The comedian praised Lever’s decades-long career and his impact on generations of Indian audiences.
Zarna Garg, a rising voice in the comedy world, described her time with Johny Lever as unforgettable. In her Instagram post titled “Legend at work and women who got to hang with him”, she spoke about the joy and inspiration she felt during the meeting.
“There is no Indian that does not break into a smile when @iam_johnylever is mentioned,” Garg wrote. “For five decades, from audio cassettes (remember those) to OTTs, Johny Lever has entertained a nation and a people.”
She added, “Today, we saw the artist behind the art and it was FIRE.”
Lever’s daughter and fellow comedian Jamie Lever, along with stand-up comic Aditi Mittal, also appeared in the photos. Garg called for Netflix to give Lever a comedy special, writing, “@netflix_in give him a comedy special now!!! His work needs to be recorded for eternity!”
Garg shared a valuable piece of advice she received from Lever during their time together. He told her, “Don’t get distracted from your art. Because your art is your anchor.”
She expressed awe at Lever’s performance style, noting that he doesn’t write down his scripts. Instead, he relies on his instincts and years of experience. Garg said this gives “a whole new meaning to ‘from the brilliant mind of.’”
Johny Lever is widely considered one of India’s greatest comedians. He started performing in the early 1980s and rose to fame with his quick wit, unique expressions, and ability to bring humor to a wide range of roles in Bollywood films. His popularity spans generations and continues to grow with appearances on digital platforms.
Zarna Garg has become a prominent name in comedy, both in the U.S. and India. Her Amazon Prime Video comedy special, One in a Billion, and her memoir, This American Woman, have earned her a loyal fan base.
Garg is currently in India for a live recording of The Zarna Garg Family Podcast. The event took place at Mumbai’s Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir auditorium on July 25. The show, which features Garg’s husband and children, focuses on light-hearted family discussions and generational humor. The taping sold out, reflecting her growing popularity in India.
