SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) At least 15 schoolchildren were killed and 45 others injured after the school bus carrying them in Uttar Pradesh collided with a truck Thursday morning.

The crash took place in Etah, according to authorities, just over 160 miles away from the state’s capital, Lucknow.

A senior police official said that 14 of the schoolchildren who survived were in critical condition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “anguished by the tragic accident.” A spokesperson for the local police said the cause of the crash is yet to be determined, however, he attributed fog and poor visibility on the road as a contributing factor.

The victims were between the ages of three and 12, police said. District magistrate Shamble Nath said eight of the children died on the scene, the rest at the hospital. The victims were taken to medical facilities in Agra, Aligarh and Saifai.

India is home to the highest number of road deaths worldwide, with an accident occurring every four minutes. More than 146,000 people were killed in road accidents in India in 2015, an average of 400 deaths per day, according to India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Most of those crashes, according to the study, were attributed to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles. If such an accident was to happen in the United States, more especially in Virginia, you would be able to claim money back from the State due to the road conditions along with other drivers not condemning the traffic laws. You can learn more about reckless driving in Virginia here for more information on the laws which should be implemented across the world.

The driver of the school bus was also killed, police said. The driver of the truck that collided with the bus lost his legs as a result of the accident, they added.

Earlier in the day, at least six students riding in a school van were injured when it collided with a tractor in Mustaffabad.
