LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — Indian American chemist Neil Garg has received the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2026 Centenary Prize, one of the organization’s most prestigious international honors. The award recognizes outstanding achievements in chemistry as well as excellence in science communication.

Garg serves as a distinguished professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he holds the Kenneth N. Trueblood Endowed Chair in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The Royal Society of Chemistry selected him for his groundbreaking work in organic chemistry and his commitment to making science accessible to broader audiences.

The Centenary Prize dates back to 1947 and marks the 100th anniversary of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s founding in 1841. The organization presents only three Centenary Prizes worldwide each year across all areas of chemistry. Winners receive a medal, a monetary prize, and an invitation to deliver lectures throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The recognition highlights Garg’s efforts to challenge long-standing ideas in organic chemistry. Over the years, his research group has developed innovative methods for building complex molecules while also expanding scientists’ understanding of fundamental chemical processes. One of the key achievements behind the award involves Garg’s work on Bredt’s rule, a principle that has guided organic chemistry for more than a century. In 2024, his team reported findings in the journal Science that challenged assumptions surrounding the rule. As a result, researchers gained new insights into how certain chemical structures can form and behave.

In addition, Garg has explored ways to break amide carbon-nitrogen bonds, which scientists traditionally viewed as highly stable. His work demonstrated new possibilities for chemical synthesis and opened doors for future discoveries. These accomplishments received further attention in the June 17, 2026, issue of Science Advances. The publication featured an article titled “Rule-breaking in chemical synthesis,” co-authored by Garg and longtime collaborator Professor Ken Houk. Houk is widely known for his expertise in computational and physical organic chemistry. Together, the two researchers have produced more than 35 scientific publications.

Their collaboration has covered several important topics, including studies on Bredt’s rule and amide carbon-nitrogen bond activation. In the Science Advances article, Garg and Houk encouraged scientists to question accepted ideas and explore new possibilities. They argued that challenging established assumptions can often lead to major advances in research. Beyond the laboratory, Garg has earned national recognition for his dedication to education and public engagement. At UCLA, he has introduced innovative teaching approaches that help students better understand organic chemistry. He has also developed educational materials that hundreds of thousands of students use around the world.

Moreover, Garg has expanded his outreach efforts through projects designed to make science more approachable. These initiatives include “The Organic Coloring Book” series, which presents chemistry concepts in a creative format. He also helped create Chem Kids, a camp that introduces young students to science through hands-on learning experiences. His ability to connect with students and the public played an important role in earning the Centenary Prize. The Royal Society of Chemistry specifically cited both his scientific achievements and his excellence in communication when announcing the award.

The latest honor adds to a growing list of achievements for Garg. In 2025, he received the David A. Evans Award for the Advancement and Education of Organic Synthesis from the American Chemical Society. Earlier, he shared the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2024 Horizon Prize as part of the Molecular Strainers Team. He also earned the 2023 Bhaumik Award for Public Engagement with Science from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. More recently, UCLA presented him with its 2026 Faculty Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Mentoring.

With the Centenary Prize, Garg joins a distinguished group of UCLA chemists who have received the honor. Previous recipients include Ric Kaner, Omar Yaghi, Fred Hawthorne, Donald Cram, and Saul Winstein.
