NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed cooperation on trade, energy, defense, technology, and regional security in newly released documents from the State Department.
The discussions took place during Rubio’s first official visit to India as Secretary of State. Both leaders described the relationship as one of the most important strategic partnerships in the world.
Jaishankar said India and the United States continue to share common interests across multiple sectors. He noted that regular engagement between both governments has helped expand cooperation on global and regional issues.
The leaders discussed developments in the Middle East, the Indo-Pacific region, and the Ukraine conflict. They also reviewed preparations for the upcoming Quad ministerial meeting. Rubio emphasized that the India-U.S. relationship extends beyond traditional diplomacy. He said both nations are strategically aligned on issues that will shape the future, including economic security, critical minerals, technology, and maritime commerce.
“India is one of our most important strategic partners in the world,” Rubio said.
Trade emerged as a key topic during the discussions. Jaishankar said both sides are working toward an interim trade agreement that could pave the way for a broader bilateral trade deal. The proposed agreement follows commitments made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington in February 2025.
Rubio acknowledged recent trade challenges but stressed that the U.S. approach reflects a broader effort to rebalance global trade relationships. He expressed confidence that both countries will reach a mutually beneficial agreement. The growing economic partnership remains a major pillar of India-U.S. relations. Technology cooperation continues to expand between the two nations. Jaishankar highlighted growing collaboration in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and emerging technologies. He said India’s expanding technology capabilities will create new opportunities for joint innovation.
Rubio described India as a trusted technology partner with companies operating at the forefront of global innovation. Both leaders agreed that the responsible development of AI and advanced technologies will be critical to future economic growth. The discussions also covered nuclear energy cooperation following recent legislative developments that could open new avenues for collaboration.
Security cooperation remains a cornerstone of the India-U.S. partnership. Jaishankar reiterated India’s policy of zero tolerance toward terrorism. He praised strong coordination between law enforcement and intelligence agencies in both countries. The minister also welcomed continued cooperation against narcotics trafficking and other transnational threats.
Rubio said both nations have suffered from terrorism and share a strong commitment to combating extremist networks. The leaders also emphasized the importance of maintaining free and open international waterways. They expressed support for safe maritime commerce and respect for international law.
The Quad partnership involving India, the United States, Japan, and Australia remains a key platform for regional cooperation. Jaishankar said the Indo-Pacific will become increasingly important in global trade, energy flows, and security. He described the Quad as a partnership among maritime democracies committed to stability and economic growth. Rubio praised India’s role in hosting the upcoming Quad meeting and said the group reflects the strategic alignment among leading democracies.
