WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President-elect Donald Trump has selected Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) as his U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, a move that shapes his second-term Cabinet to considerable effect. Trump hailed Stefanik, the chairwoman of the House Conference and a Republican, as “a strong, tough, and smart America First fighter.” Stefanik, one of Trump’s strongest allies on Capitol Hill, is likely to sail through the Senate, now controlled by Republicans.
Elected in 2014 as the youngest woman in U.S. history to Congress, Stefanik has more recently come increasingly into alignment with Trump, becoming a vocal defender during the 2019 impeachment and election challenges a year later. She also took the reins on issues involving antisemitism and Israel.
And though the former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley has long been rumored for a return, Trump made clear that she would not join his administration this time. The resignation by Stefanik will trigger a special election in New York, a seat considered safe for Republicans.
