WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Trump said Wednesday he had ordered the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to prepare a migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to house as many as 30,000 migrants.
Trump said the facility, which has served as a place of temporary shelter for many years for migrants, will contribute to the administration’s efforts in dealing with unlawful immigration. He mentioned that the facility would be used in detaining various people who pose significant threats to the United States, adding that some of them are viewed as too dangerous for their host countries.
“This will double our capacity immediately, right? And, tough,” Trump said, referring to the move at the White House. The decision marks an expansion of the Pentagon’s role in handling immigration issues, building on recent actions, including the deployment of over 1,600 active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Guantanamo Bay facility already hosts the U.S. prison for foreign terrorism suspects and has previously been used in detaining migrants. Nonetheless, the new migrant detention facility is to stand separately from the detention center already in use for terrorism-related detainees. Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Trump had decided to make use of Buckley Space Force Base, Colorado, to detain migrants.
In addition to these steps, the U.S. military has increased deportation flights for migrants and maintained its emergency immigration measures.
