OAKLAND, Calif. (Diya TV) — Wayne Shaw, the older brother of Bay Area rap legend Too Short, was shot and killed early Wednesday morning during an attempted robbery in East Oakland, authorities said.
The shooting occurred around 7 a.m. near an industrial building on 49th Avenue, close to East 12th Street. Police said multiple suspects tried to ram a car into the building in what appeared to be an effort to break in. When Shaw, 61, stepped outside, he was confronted by the suspects, who then fired several rounds, hitting him multiple times.
Shaw was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Investigators have not determined whether Shaw was specifically targeted or if the shooting was random. No arrests have been made, and authorities are searching for the suspects, who fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.
Oakland police Lt. Gloria Beltran confirmed the details of the confrontation, and investigators are also looking into Shaw’s connection to the property that was targeted.
Too Short, whose real name is Todd Anthony Shaw, grew up in Oakland and is known as a pioneer of West Coast hip-hop. He started his career in the 1980s and has remained a major figure in the music industry. In 2022, East Oakland honored him by naming a street after him. As of now, Too Short has not publicly commented on his brother’s death.
The Oakland Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
