WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — President Trump has agreed to temporarily halt his planned tariffs on Mexican imports for one month after a conversation with Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum. The two leaders spoke Friday about border security and trade, and Sheinbaum agreed to deploy 10,000 more troops to the northern border.
Trump announced the agreement in a post on Truth Social, saying, “It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl and illegal migrants into our Country.
In turn, Trump agreed to delay the 25% tariffs he started ordering on all Mexican imports, which were due to kick in on Tuesday. He stated that the next month will bring high-level negotiations, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, as well as Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. According to a statement by Trump, he will participate in the negotiations.
Sheinbaum confirmed the deal on X, saying Mexico will enhance border security to combat drug trafficking, especially fentanyl. She said the U.S. had agreed to act to stop high-powered weapons from entering Mexico. Her statement did not include immigration enforcement, but Trump’s post highlighted it as a central part of the deal.
The deal comes a few days after President Trump issued the executive order accusing Mexico’s government of allowing drug cartels to operate free and Sheinbaum had threatened retaliatory tariffs based on that.
On Monday, Trump also met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss a similar 25% tariff on Canadian imports. However, the discussions did not lead to an immediate resolution.
