TORONTO (Diya TV) – Last week, a road accident in Canada claimed the lives of three Indian students from Punjab. The victims, identified as siblings Harman Somal (23) and Navjot Somal (19) from Malaud village in Ludhiana, and their friend Rashmdeep Kaur (23) from Samana in Sangrur district, had gone to Canada for their studies.
The accident occurred on July 27 around 9:27 PM on Highway 2 in Mill Cove, New Brunswick, as reported by Times Now. The students were traveling from Moncton city when a tire burst caused their vehicle to overturn. Local reports indicate that they were returning by taxi after submitting their PR files in Moncton.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) revealed that the accident happened when the car lost control after the tire burst, leading to the vehicle overturning. All three students suffered severe injuries and were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. The taxi driver survived the incident.
The families of the victims are urging the Punjab Government to assist in bringing the bodies back to their native villages. This incident adds to the grim statistics provided by the Ministry of External Affairs, which reported 633 deaths of Indian students abroad in the last five years, with Canada accounting for 172 of those cases.
Just days before this incident, Lakhwinder Kaur, another Punjabi student from Batala in Gurdaspur, also died in a road accident near Brampton. She had been in Canada on a study visa for ten months.
The loss of these young lives has cast a shadow of grief over their hometowns. The families of Harman and Navjot Somal, who took loans to send their children to Canada for a better future, are devastated. Harman had been working at a daycare center in Moncton, while Navjot had recently arrived in Canada to pursue his studies.
Rashmdeep Kaur’s parents, both government teachers, are also mourning the loss of their daughter. Chamkaur Singh, Rashmdeep’s uncle, expressed his sorrow and recounted how she had gone to Canada four years ago.
