DALLAS (Diya TV) — This year’s DFW South Asian Film Festival will kick off on March 3rd. The three-day extravaganza will open festivities with a screening of bold and sensitive film about race and ethnicity, A Billion Colour Story, directed by Padmakumar Narasimhamurthy and produced by Satish Kaushik.
“We are excited and honored to welcome the Texas premiere of this film at our festival,” said Jitin Hingorani, founder and festival director, in a release. “Race and immigration have, unfortunately, become such hot-button issues in our current political climate, and if a schoolboy can navigate through these topics in a film, we certainly hope our governments can attempt to do the same,” Hingorani added.
The festival, now its 3rd year will be showcasing 20 shorts, documentaries and feature films from March 3rd to 5th. It will include films that speak to children, youth and adults as well as gender specific & LGBTQ issues. Festival founder and director Hingorani has an ambitious and a savvy approach to curating the festival, bringing together a collage of films that touch people in different ways, questioning the status quo and pushing the boundaries of comfort, “just enough” says Hingorani adding that it’s a delicate balance one he is aware is crucial to success of any festival.
“Every film at our festival is either a Texas, North American or World Premiere! We don’t screen ANY films that have already released in the theaters or are available online”
DFWSAFF will start off with a short and a feature on Friday night moving into a full day of shorts and features Saturday exploring the boundaries of topics from LGBTQ , Indo-pak relations to the Centerpiece on Saturday night ‘Khoya’ complete with a Q&A with writer, director Sami Khan & Actor Rupak Ginn.
This year’s festival will be open at Perot Museum in downtown Dallas and the next two days of the event will shift to AMC Village. “Our short films make up more than 50 percent of our programming this year because the genre has really been gaining momentum in South Asia,” Artistic Director Ambica Dev said.
Sunday will conclude with focus on Children & Women, featuring shorts like Amishi & Leeches, both directed by women directors and closing night feature ‘Doctor Rakhmabai’ a film based on the true story of India’s first practicing lady doctor, a social rebel and a pioneer played by Tannishtha Chatterjee, directed by first time director, Nandu Achrekar alongside veteran actor, director Ananth Mahadevan.
