MUMBAI (Diya TV) — American electric vehicle giant Tesla has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first experience center in Mumbai. Located in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), the showroom opened its doors to the public on July 15, 2025, marking a major milestone for the company in one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets.
Tesla’s first retail space in India spans 4,000 square feet in BKC. The location sits in Mumbai’s prime Central Business District, known for housing leading financial and business institutions. The showroom is designed as an “experience center,” allowing potential customers to explore Tesla’s electric vehicles in a high-end setting.
According to reports, Tesla has leased the space for approximately ₹4 crore (nearly $500,000) per year. The company’s entry into India has been long anticipated, and the BKC showroom signals the start of a phased rollout across major Indian cities.
Tesla has imported five Model Y electric SUVs from its Shanghai Gigafactory for display at the Mumbai showroom. These cars give Indian customers a first look at the brand’s signature technology and design. Each Model Y is expected to be priced around ₹50 lakh, though the final pricing may vary depending on demand and import duties.
Additional Tesla models may be introduced based on market interest, according to company insiders. While the brand has not disclosed an official launch schedule for other vehicles, industry experts expect offerings to expand gradually.
Tesla currently has no plans to manufacture cars in India. However, industry analysts suggest that production plans could be considered if trade relations between India and the United States improve. A possible Indo-U.S. trade deal may reduce customs duties on American products, including electric vehicles, making Tesla cars more affordable for Indian consumers.
This move could help Tesla navigate around existing import tariffs, which were tightened under the former Trump administration and remain a barrier to cost-effective entry into foreign markets.
Tesla’s Mumbai showroom is only the beginning. Sources indicate the company plans to open its second experience center in New Delhi. Other metro cities are also likely to follow, aligning with Tesla’s global strategy of targeting urban markets with high purchasing power and infrastructure readiness.
India’s rising demand for electric vehicles—especially in the premium segment—makes it an attractive market for Tesla. The Indian government has also been pushing for faster adoption of EVs to reduce carbon emissions and dependency on fossil fuels.
Even before the showroom’s launch, Tesla had already made its way into the fleets of some of India’s most prominent business figures. Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries, and Prashant Ruia, Director of the Essar Group, reportedly own Tesla cars. Their early adoption highlights growing interest in electric mobility among India’s elite.
Tesla’s presence in India could also spark further investment in charging infrastructure, battery technology, and sustainable energy solutions.
Auto analysts see India as a key growth opportunity for Tesla. The country’s expanding middle and upper classes, combined with rising fuel prices and urban pollution, have fueled a steady increase in demand for electric vehicles.
Although Tesla faces competition from local players like Tata Motors and international brands such as BYD, its strong global brand and cutting-edge technology give it a unique advantage.
With the launch of its Mumbai experience center, Tesla has taken its first official step into India. As interest grows and policy conditions evolve, the company is well-positioned to tap into one of the world’s most dynamic electric vehicle markets.
