SAN JOSE, Calif. (Diya TV) — The Bay Area is set to celebrate Indian culture and community spirit as AIA SWADES 2026 returns to Downtown San Jose on Saturday, Aug. 15. The annual event will mark two historic milestones. It will celebrate the United States’ 250th Independence Day and India’s 80th Independence Day. Organizers expect thousands of visitors to attend the free, family-friendly festival at Plaza de Cesar Chavez.
This year’s celebration will feature Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu as the Honorable Guest and Grand Marshal. Her appearance is expected to draw fans from across California and beyond. As a result, organizers believe the event will attract even more visitors than in previous years. Diya TV is a media partner for the event.
Several prominent leaders will also attend the celebration. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan will join the event as a chief guest. India’s Consul General in San Francisco, Dr. Srikar Reddy, will also participate in the festivities.
The celebration will take place at the historic Plaza de Cesar Chavez in the heart of Downtown San Jose. Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy cultural programs, live entertainment, traditional food, shopping, and family activities. Because admission is free, organizers hope people of all backgrounds will take part in the festivities.
One of the biggest attractions will be the Multinational Parade. The parade will begin at 4 p.m. and continue until 6 p.m. More than 75 colorful floats, marching bands, cultural organizations, and community groups will participate. In addition, performers will showcase music, dance, and traditions from different cultures. Organizers describe the parade as one of the largest multinational parades in the Bay Area. Therefore, it has become a signature highlight of the annual festival.
The celebration will begin even earlier with the Day & Night Mela, which will run from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. Visitors can explore a lively festival atmosphere filled with entertainment and cultural experiences. They can enjoy a wide variety of Indian and international foods at the Food Festival. Meanwhile, the shopping marketplace will feature clothing, jewelry, handicrafts, and other products from local businesses and vendors.
Cultural performances will continue throughout the day. Dance groups and musicians will present traditional and modern acts on stage. In addition, the fashion show will showcase colorful designs inspired by Indian heritage and contemporary styles. Families with children can also visit the Kids Zone, where interactive activities will keep young visitors engaged.
The event will also honor India’s journey since independence. Visitors can participate in the Historic Flag Walk and the Tiranga Walk. These activities will celebrate India’s 80 years of independence while highlighting the nation’s history and cultural identity. At the same time, the celebration will recognize the values of freedom, diversity, and unity that connect both India and the United States.
Organizers say the festival represents much more than entertainment. Instead, it serves as a platform to celebrate cultural pride while encouraging unity across generations. It also recognizes the achievements of Indian Americans in business, education, technology, public service, and the arts. Consequently, many community members consider the event an emerging tradition.
