WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked Missouri from using a congressional map adopted by the state’s Republican-led Legislature for the November midterm elections.

The justices granted an emergency request from People Not Politicians and suspended a Sept. 8 federal court order that required Missouri to use the 2025 map. The Supreme Court’s order will remain in effect while the case proceeds through the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and any subsequent Supreme Court review. No justice publicly dissented.

The decision leaves in place a Missouri Supreme Court ruling requiring the state to use congressional districts adopted in 2022 for the Nov. 3 general election.

Missouri lawmakers approved the new map in September 2025, and Gov. Mike Kehoe signed it Sept. 28. The map reconfigured the Kansas City-based district represented by Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. Kehoe credited President Donald Trump, state lawmakers and Missouri’s congressional delegation for supporting the redistricting effort.

People Not Politicians later submitted more than 300,000 signatures seeking a statewide referendum on the new districts. Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins rejected the petition, arguing that the state constitution’s referendum provision did not apply to congressional redistricting.

On Sept. 3, the Missouri Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the referendum petition was legal, sufficient and timely. The court held that the 2025 map never took effect and cannot do so unless voters approve it in the November referendum. It ordered the 2022 map to be used in the general election.

Missouri officials asked the U.S. Supreme Court to pause that decision, but Justice Brett Kavanaugh denied the request Sept. 8. Later that day, U.S. District Judge Stephen Clark issued a temporary order in a separate federal lawsuit requiring the state to use the 2025 map.

People Not Politicians appealed Clark’s order and asked the Supreme Court to intervene. Thursday’s order suspended Clark’s ruling while that federal case continues.

Missouri used the 2025 districts for its Aug. 4 primary elections. Under the current court orders, the state will use the 2022 districts for the November general election.

The referendum on the 2025 congressional map is scheduled to appear on Missouri’s November ballot.
