NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India. He will take the helm from current Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. Justice Khanna will be in office until May 2025.
Born in 1960, Justice Khanna brings more than four decades of legal experience to the table, along with a reputation for integrity and judicial excellence. He began his career in 1983 by enrolling as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi. He was a junior in district courts and Delhi High Court. He has been a permanent member of the High Court since 2005 and joined the Supreme Court in 2019. Several landmark judgments in which he contributed to issues of personal liberty and democratic rights have come under his care.
He has been pragmatic about the complexity of issues during his tenure and has found a balance between individual rights and judicial efficiency. As Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, he has also focused on building up access to justice at the grassroots level.
Justice Khanna will assume charge immediately after the resignation of Justice Chandrachud from office, whose regime marked some of the most decisive contribution to landmark constitutional interpretation in the country. Some formidable challenges lie ahead for this CJI: the huge numbers pending in courts and maintaining an independent judiciary in this time of change in a larger political and social sphere.
The oath-taking ceremony has been set on November 11 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where Indian President Droupadi Murmu will be on hand.
