SAN FRANCISCO (Diya TV) — The home of Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, appears to have been targeted in a second security incident early Sunday, just two days after an alleged Molotov cocktail attack on the same property, according to police and local reports. Authorities said no injuries were reported in either incident. The back-to-back events have raised concerns about safety and the growing tension surrounding advances in artificial intelligence.
The San Francisco Police Department said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 1:40 a.m. Sunday near Altman’s residence in San Francisco. According to an initial police report, a Honda sedan drove past the property, then returned minutes later. A person in the passenger seat appeared to fire a single round from the vehicle while it was stopped near the Lombard Street side of the home. Security personnel at the property reported hearing a gunshot. Surveillance cameras captured the incident and recorded the vehicle’s license plate. Police later used that information to locate the car.
Officers detained two suspects without incident in the 2000 block of Taylor Street. Authorities identified them as Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23. Police booked both on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm. Investigators said a search of a residence linked to the suspects uncovered three firearms. Officials have not yet confirmed whether those weapons were used in the incident. Neither police nor OpenAI immediately released additional details.
The latest incident follows a separate attack early Friday morning that also targeted Altman’s property. Police said a 20-year-old man from Texas, identified as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at a metal gate outside the home around 3:40 a.m. The device consisted of a bottle filled with flammable liquid and a burning rag. Security guards quickly extinguished the flames before the fire could spread. Surveillance footage captured the suspect at the scene.
Shortly after the attack, security staff at OpenAI’s headquarters in the Mission Bay neighborhood encountered a person matching the suspect’s description. According to the company, the individual made threatening statements about the building. Police took the suspect into custody soon after. Authorities booked Moreno-Gama into San Francisco County Jail on multiple charges. These include attempted murder, arson, and possession or manufacture of an incendiary device.
The two incidents come amid rising public debate over artificial intelligence and its impact on society. Altman addressed the issue following the Friday attack. He said concerns about AI are understandable as the technology continues to evolve rapidly.
“We are in the process of witnessing the largest change to society in a long time,” Altman wrote, noting that the scale of transformation may be unprecedented.
Experts say AI has sparked both excitement and fear. Supporters highlight its potential to improve productivity, healthcare,e and communication. Critics warn about job loss, misinformation,n and misuse of advanced systems. While authorities have not confirmed any direct link between the attacks and AI-related tensions, the timing has drawn attention.
Police continue to investigate both incidents. Officials have not said whether the suspects in the Sunday shooting had any connection to the earlier Molotov cocktail attack.
Authorities also have not released a motive in either case. Law enforcement officials urged anyone with additional information to come forward. They said surveillance footage and witness accounts remain key to the investigation. Despite the incidents, no injuries have been reported, and damage appears to have been limited.
