NEW YORK (Diya TV) — Leaders of Sakhi for South Asian Women, a nonprofit dedicated to aiding survivors of gender-based violence within New York City’s South Asian diaspora, were invited to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on March 1, 2024. This occasion coincided with Women’s History Month, marking Sakhi as one of the first South Asian American organizations to receive this prestigious honor.

Established in 1989, Sakhi has been a leading advocate for gender justice and providing culturally sensitive programs to address the unique challenges faced by survivors in the South Asian diaspora. Over the past 35 years, Sakhi’s relentless efforts have contributed to the creation of safer and more equitable communities for all.

Kavita Mehra, Sakhi’s Executive Director, expressed the significance of the event, stating, “Ringing the closing bell at NYSE is a historic moment for both the South Asian diaspora and Sakhi. This milestone not only celebrates our 35th anniversary, but also recognizes the pivotal role of the South Asian American feminist movement in shaping communities across New York City.”

The bell-ringing ceremony at NYSE served as a symbol of Sakhi’s commitment to empowering survivors and advancing gender justice. Having impacted over 15,000 lives throughout its history, Sakhi continues to serve as a beacon of hope for survivors in need of support and assistance.

In addition to the bell-ringing ceremony, Sakhi will host a gala, titled “Threads of Transformation,” on April 26, 2024, at the Glasshouse in New York City. This gala will provide an opportunity to celebrate Sakhi’s achievements and reaffirm its dedication to ending gender-based violence.
