OTTAWA, Canada (Diya TV) — Former Liberal Member of Parliament Ruby Dhalla has been disqualified from the leadership race of the Liberal Party based on unanimous recommendations by two party committees. The disqualification was made public on February 21 and is based on ten campaign rule violations, including false reporting of finances.
The national director of the party, Azam Ishmael, said the move was the result of “an extensive process” and resulted from “extremely serious” infractions of the rules.
The former member of Parliament for the riding of Brampton—Springdale from 2004 to 2011 has emphatically denied the accusation, calling it “false” and “fabricated.” She indicated that her disqualification was possibly motivated by bias against her being of Indian descent and accused the party of not wanting her elected.
The other contenders in the leadership contest are Mark Carney, Chrystia Freeland, Frank Baylis, and Karina Gould. The Liberal Party will choose its new leader on March 9.
This leadership race follows Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement that he will resign once a replacement is elected. The new leader will have their work cut out for them, including responding to recent threats by President Trump to impose tariffs on all imports from Canada.
