WASHINGTON, D.C. (Diya TV) — Influential Republican lawmaker Lance Gooden has raised concerns over the Biden administration’s investigation into Gautam Adani’s companies, calling it a “selective action” that could harm U.S.-India relations. In a letter sent to U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on January 7, Gooden criticized the Justice Department for its actions, questioning whether financier George Soros had any role in the matter.
Gooden, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, insisted that the Department of Justice (DOJ) should focus on domestic issues rather than engaging in flimsy cases involving foreign entities. He cautioned that the investigation into the Indian industrialist’s group might jeopardize the important alliance Washington has with India, one of the United States’ closest allies in the Asia-Pacific region.
“The DOJ’s selective actions risk damaging critical alliances with key partners like India,” Gooden said in the letter. He was critical of the minimal relevance such cases have to the interests of the United States, and recommended the department should target domestic bad actors instead.
All accusations have been strictly denied by the Adani Group, a multinational energy and infrastructure conglomerate. The Justice Department continues its probe despite the objection of the company.
Gooden’s letter ignited further debate in the U.S. government on its approach towards foreign investigations, which may jeopardize international relationships, especially with India.
