CARLSBAD, Calif. (Diya TV) — The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced the appointment of Indian American business leader Pritesh Patel as its new president and chief executive officer. Patel will officially take over the role on Aug. 4, succeeding Susan M. Jacques, who has served as CEO since 2014.

Patel, who currently serves as GIA’s chief operating officer, brings nearly a decade of leadership experience at the Institute. His appointment marks a new chapter for GIA, a global authority in gemology and diamond grading. The board of governors selected Patel following a thorough international search.

Susan M. Jacques will continue to serve as a strategic advisor to the organization until her retirement at the end of this year. During her tenure, Jacques guided GIA through a period of growth and technological innovation. She also expanded the organization’s global presence.

“I am delighted that the board of governors has selected Pritesh as my successor,” Jacques said. “He is the right leader for the future of GIA. I will work closely with him and the team to ensure a smooth transition.”

Lisa A. Locklear, chair of the GIA board of governors, expressed strong confidence in Patel’s leadership abilities. “Pritesh’s outstanding experience, character, and understanding of the industry and the Institute are exceptionally well-suited to build upon GIA’s nearly 100 years of service,” Locklear said.

Patel joined GIA in 2015 as its chief information officer. Two years later, he was promoted to chief operating officer. In that role, he led key initiatives to enhance the Institute’s operations and global strategy. He also played a critical role in the development and implementation of advanced digital systems across GIA’s worldwide network.

“It’s the honor of a lifetime to lead this organization,” Patel said. “Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the most dedicated and talented individuals in the industry. I’m inspired by GIA’s legacy of excellence and integrity.”

He added, “I am committed to building on that foundation with humility, purpose, and a bold vision for the future.”

Before joining GIA, Patel built a career in global IT and operational leadership. He served as Vice President of Information Technology at CIRCOR International Inc. He also held senior roles at major companies like Boeing, OK International, and Bearing Inspection Inc.

A native of Gujarat, India, Patel moved to the United States for higher education. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems from California State University, Long Beach.

In addition to his formal education, Patel completed executive leadership programs at both Harvard Business School and the Gemological Institute of America.

Patel steps into his new role at a time when GIA continues to evolve with the gem and jewelry industry. The organization is known for its diamond grading reports, gemological education, and advanced research. With Patel at the helm, GIA aims to strengthen its commitment to consumer protection and scientific excellence.

Industry experts say Patel’s background in both technology and operations makes him uniquely qualified to lead GIA into its next phase. His appointment reflects the Institute’s focus on innovation, trust, and global leadership in gemology.
