LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — “Patel,” the highly anticipated feature film from writer-director Ravi Kapoor, has officially wrapped production reports Variety. The film, a dark and comedic take on ambition in immigrant America, blends crime, tragedy and satire in a unique cinematic style.
Described as a “deadpan gangster tragedy,” Patel explores the world of Indian American–owned motels through a darkly comic lens. Kapoor, known for his acclaimed indie film Four Samosas, calls this project “a dark, bloody clown piece that’s a nod to immigrant ambition.”
Inspired loosely by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the story takes on themes of power, ambition and identity. Kapoor said he is excited to share this “piece of madness” with the world, crediting the cast, crew and producers for their dedication and creative energy.
“Patel” features a powerful ensemble cast of South Asian American actors. Utkarsh Ambudkar (Ghosts) stars in the film alongside Richa Moorjani (Never Have I Ever), Kal Penn (The Namesake), Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), and Danny Pudi (Community).
Ambudkar, who also serves as a producer, shared his excitement about reuniting with Kapoor. “This role has been the most challenging and rewarding of my career,” he said. “To be seen like this — together — is nothing short of a dream come true.”
The production is a collaboration between Junglee Films, Prism Entertainment and Camelback Productions. Kapoor wrote and directed the film, while Ambudkar, Megha Kadakia, Ashim Ahuja and Anita Verma-Lallian joined him as producers.
Production began in June in Los Angeles. The film is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“Patel” also boasts a notable team of executive producers who are committed to supporting underrepresented voices in Hollywood. These include Kal Penn, Richa Moorjani, Danny Pudi, Meera Simhan, Rizwan Manji, Anita Bhatia of Maharani Productions, Priya Giri Desai, Shruti Ganguly, Smita Mehta, MD, Jennifer Verma of Camelback Productions and Christine Yi of Gold House.
“Patel” marks a significant step forward in the representation of South Asian talent in American cinema. The film industry has historically offered limited space to South Asian actors, often casting them in stereotypical roles or isolating them in competition with one another.
Ambudkar noted this shift, saying, “The South Asian film community has come a long way. Historically, our industry has often kept us in competition, so to be seen like this — together — is nothing short of a dream come true.”
Kapoor emphasized that the cast and crew all shared a common bond. “We are all Patel,” he said, referring to both the film’s title and the cultural ties that unify the project.
The film’s talent is represented by top Hollywood agencies. Kapoor is represented by Verve Talent and Literary Agency. Ambudkar is represented by Gersh, 3 Arts and Jackoway Austen. Moorjani, Penn, Nayyar, Pudi, Simhan and Manji are also represented by major agencies, including UTA, Innovative Artists and Paradigm.
As Indian American and South Asian voices gain momentum in mainstream media, “Patel” stands out as a bold story that reflects a growing desire for authentic narratives. With its high-profile cast and socially relevant themes, the film is poised to make an impact when it hits screens.
