ATLANTA, Ga. (Diya TV) — Padma Shri awardee Kanubhai Tailor recently visited Atlanta, where he was warmly received by the local Gujarati community. The visit included cultural events, temple visits, and discussions about his work empowering differently-abled individuals, known in India as Divyang.
Tailor’s visit drew attention from community leaders, including President Vinod Kaswala, Bihari Patel, Manoj Barot, and Rotary members Chatur Chhabhaya and Mustafa Ajameri. Past president Vasudev Patel, Ramesh Suhagia, Jayantibhai Patel of BAPS, Rotary President Bharveeben, Girishbhai Mukhi, Amrutbhai Patel, and Prakash Shrivastav were also present. Chatur Chhabhaya and the Rotary Club of Atlanta organized a special lunch in his honor.
During his stay, Tailor visited several temples, including the BAPS Temple, Gadhapurdham Temple, and SMVS Temple. He shared his personal journey and the work that earned him national recognition. Tailor spoke about the challenges he faced growing up in a lower-income family. Despite hardships, he completed his graduation with the support of family and friends.
Instead of focusing on his struggles, Tailor devoted himself to helping differently-abled individuals. His efforts have improved the lives of many in Gujarat and earned him the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2011.
Tailor highlighted several initiatives that focus on the education and well-being of Divyang individuals. He established a school for Divyang children from grades 1 to 12. In Surat, he opened a technical ITI and a BCA college exclusively for Divyang students. Tailor also set up a residential facility for elderly Divyang individuals, which he said is the first of its kind in the world.
These initiatives aim to provide education, vocational training, and a safe living environment for differently-abled people. Tailor’s work emphasizes independence, dignity, and opportunities for every individual.
Tailor expressed gratitude for the support he has received from Indian leaders over the years. “I am thankful to leaders from Indira Gandhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for their encouragement,” he said. “Their support has helped me continue my mission of uplifting physically challenged individuals in Gujarat.”
Members of the Gujarati community in Atlanta described Tailor’s visit as meaningful and inspiring. They praised his lifelong commitment to building dignity and independence for differently-abled individuals. The event provided a chance for the community to learn from Tailor’s experiences and understand the importance of inclusive education and social initiatives.
