NEW YORK (Diya TV) — Past social media posts by Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, have drawn renewed scrutiny online. A review by the Washington Free Beacon says the posts, made when Duwaji was a teenager and in her early 20s, included statements and images related to Palestinian militant groups and other controversial topics.
The report says Duwaji used accounts on X and Tumblr under usernames that appeared to reference her name. The accounts are now inactive. The review links them to her through personal details, including her birthday and references to places she lived.
Some posts highlighted figures associated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The United States designates the PFLP as a terrorist organization. In one 2017 Tumblr post, the account shared an image of Leila Khaled, known for plane hijackings in 1969 and 1970. The caption echoed a quote attributed to Khaled about accepting death for a cause. Other posts mentioned the First Intifada. That uprising lasted from 1987 to 1993 and involved widespread violence. The review says the account shared historical images and captions tied to that period.
The report also points to reposts and comments on political issues. One 2015 Tumblr repost criticized U.S. military actions abroad. Another shared a claim about the origins of al-Qaida. The same account also amplified posts critical of Israel, including reactions to a social media feature highlighting Tel Aviv. In a separate claim, the review says Duwaji used a racial slur in a 2013 post on X. At the time, she was 15 years old. The post has since resurfaced online and prompted criticism.
The report further notes that Duwaji shared or reposted content praising individuals described as “resistance” figures. Some of those individuals were linked to violent attacks in the past. The review says these posts appeared between 2013 and 2017.
Duwaji, 28, has a background that spans several countries. She was born in the United States and spent part of her childhood in New Jersey. Her family later moved to Dubai. She also studied art at Virginia Commonwealth University campuses in Qatar and Richmond, Virginia.
The report says many of the posts date to the period when she lived in the Middle East. The accounts later became inactive. Tumblr policies allow usernames to become public after long periods of inactivity, which can complicate verification. The review also connects the accounts to Duwaji through references to a pet cat and travel locations. It says these details match publicly known information about her life.
The claims come amid wider scrutiny of public figures’ past online activity. In recent weeks, online users have revisited older posts by several public figures, especially those tied to global conflicts.
The report also mentions a separate controversy involving an essay illustrated by Duwaji. The essay’s author made comments about the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas that drew strong backlash. Mayor Mamdani later described those remarks as “reprehensible,” according to the report. Neither Duwaji nor a representative for the mayor responded to requests for comment cited in the review.
