NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Vikram Doraiswami has been appointed as India’s new ambassador to China, marking a key diplomatic move as both countries try to stabilize relations after years of tension. The appointment comes at a sensitive time. India and China have been working to rebuild ties following the deadly Galwan Valley clash. The clash in 2020 pushed relations to their lowest point in decades. Although tensions began easing in late 2024, trust remains fragile.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced Doraiswami’s appointment on Thursday. He will replace Pradeep Kumar Rawat in Beijing. Officials expect him to assume his role soon.

Doraiswami currently serves as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. His move to Beijing signals India’s intent to strengthen diplomatic engagement with China. Experts view this appointment as strategic. India and China have increased diplomatic and military talks in recent months. Both sides aim to maintain peace along the Line of Actual Control and avoid further escalation.

Doraiswami’s experience may help improve communication between the two nations. He has previously worked in China and understands the region well. He also speaks Mandarin, which gives him an added advantage in direct negotiations. India and China continue to hold talks at multiple levels. These include military discussions and diplomatic meetings. Both countries want to reduce tensions along their disputed border.

The easing of tensions in October 2024 created an opportunity for renewed dialogue. However, challenges remain. Border issues and strategic rivalry still shape the relationship. Doraiswami’s appointment reflects a cautious but clear effort by India to manage these challenges through diplomacy.

Doraiswami belongs to the 1992 batch of the Indian Foreign Service. He has built a strong reputation over three decades. He studied history at Delhi University. Before joining the foreign service, he worked briefly as a journalist.

His early diplomatic career included a posting in Hong Kong in 1994. During this time, he studied Chinese language and culture. He later served in Beijing from 1996 to 2000, gaining firsthand experience in dealing with Chinese officials. Over the years, Doraiswami has held several key positions. He worked at the Prime Minister’s Office and served at India’s mission to the United Nations in New York. He also held assignments in Johannesburg.

He served as ambassador to Uzbekistan and the Republic of Korea. He later became High Commissioner to Bangladesh, where he played an important role in strengthening bilateral ties. In September 2022, he took charge as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Doraiswami’s language skills set him apart. He speaks Mandarin and French fluently. He also understands Korean. These skills help him connect with foreign leaders and officials more effectively. His experience in East Asia adds further value to his new role in China.

Diplomatic experts believe his background will help manage complex negotiations. India-China relations require careful handling. Cultural understanding and clear communication often play a key role.

India and China remain major global powers with shared and competing interests. Their relationship affects regional stability and global politics. Doraiswami’s appointment comes as both countries explore ways to rebuild trust. Continued dialogue will be essential in the coming months. While tensions have eased, both sides remain cautious. Progress will likely be slow and measured.

India hopes Doraiswami’s experience and expertise will help maintain stability. His role will focus on strengthening communication and preventing misunderstandings. As he prepares to take charge in Beijing, expectations remain high. His leadership may shape the next phase of India-China relations.
