WASHINGTON, D.C. — Chairperson of Reliance Foundation Nita Ambani appeared at a private reception on the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 18, in a stunning custom Kanchipuram silk sari, adorned with heritage Indian jewelry, that speaks to India’s cultural riches for an international audience.
The sari was designed by National Award-winning artisan B. Krishnamoorthy, and there were over 100 motifs intricately woven on it that would remind one of the grand temples of Kanchipuram. The Iruthalaipakshi, with its double-headed eagle representing Lord Vishnu, and the Mayil, a symbol of immortality and divinity, adorned the saree. Myths like Sorgavasal animal trails had also been woven, reflecting the ancient spiritual and cultural traditions of India.
This traditional saree was paired with a velvet blouse designed by renowned fashion designer Manish Malhotra. The blouse had a built-up neckline and beadwork along its sleeves, giving a contemporary feel to the whole ensemble. Her rare 200-year-old Indian pendant, intricately crafted with emeralds, rubies, diamonds, and pearls, using the gold Kundan technique, completed her look.
The appearance was itself a statement of cultural pride as the Reliance Foundation pointed out that Ambani was carrying warm wishes of India onto this global platform.
