LOS ANGELES (Diya TV) — The NFL will end the Pro Bowl Games after the 2025 season and return the annual event to its roots. Starting with the 2026 season, the league will focus on honoring players selected to the Pro Bowl rather than staging an all-star competition.
The NFL will name 88 players to the 2026 Pro Bowl class in late December. The league will not name replacement players. Instead, selected players will receive recognition for their performance during the regular season.
The decision marks a major change for the NFL Pro Bowl. For years, the league has tried different formats to make the event more entertaining. However, the NFL now believes players and fans place greater value on the honor itself.
NFL executive vice president Peter O’Reilly said the league accepts the decision to move away from an all-star game. He said the NFL can become the first major league to stop trying to create a competitive all-star contest.
The league will still bring Pro Bowl selections together in person. Players will attend a celebration in Los Angeles during the weekend that traditionally hosted the Pro Bowl Games. The event will recognize the players and their achievements instead of featuring a football competition.
NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said the change came from discussions with players. He said players value the recognition that comes from earning a Pro Bowl selection.
Players earn Pro Bowl honors through votes from fans, coaches and fellow players. Therefore, the selection carries significance beyond the event itself. The NFL wants to make that recognition more meaningful for the players who earn it.
Vincent also said players told the league they do not want competitive play after the playoffs. The Pro Bowl traditionally takes place after the conference championship games and before the Super Bowl.
That timing created a challenge for the NFL. Players who reach the Super Bowl already face a demanding postseason schedule. Other players may also avoid unnecessary contact late in the season.
Vincent said the physical nature of playoff football makes it difficult to create a meaningful competitive game afterward. He added that trying to reproduce that intensity does not provide a good representation of the sport.
The NFL has held a Pro Bowl in some form since 1938. The league did not hold the event in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In later years, the NFL changed the format to attract more interest and reduce physical risks.
The league introduced the Pro Bowl Games in 2023. The new format replaced the traditional tackle football game with a series of skills events. Players competed in activities such as dodgeball, throwing contests and other challenges.
The event eventually ended with a flag football game between AFC and NFC players. The NFL hoped the new approach would provide entertainment while limiting the physical demands of a full tackle football game.
However, the format did not solve the league’s larger challenge. The NFL now believes the Pro Bowl can better serve its purpose without competitive play.
The 2026 Pro Bowl will therefore look very different. Fans will still see their favorite players receive one of the league’s top individual honors. However, they will not see an AFC vs. NFC game or another replacement competition.
The change also puts greater emphasis on the Pro Bowl selection itself. Players will continue to compete throughout the regular season for the votes and recognition that come with the honor.
For the NFL, the new approach represents a return to the main reason the Pro Bowl exists. Rather than asking selected players to compete again, the league will celebrate what they already accomplished during the season.
