NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked his first official visit to Kashmir’s main city since 2019, amidst heightened tensions and security measures. Speaking at a soccer stadium in Srinagar, Modi announced development projects while addressing a crowd, emphasizing the region’s progress since the constitutional changes of 2019.

Modi’s visit comes as a significant step in the government’s efforts to showcase Kashmir’s integration with the rest of India. He accused previous governments of misleading the public about the region’s special status, which was revoked in 2019, leading to the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two federal territories.

The Prime Minister’s remarks underscored the government’s commitment to winning the hearts of Kashmiris, despite criticism from pro-India parties in the region. However, Modi did not address demands for elections or the restoration of statehood, issues raised by Kashmir’s political leaders.

Security measures were tightened across the Kashmir Valley, with thousands of armed forces deployed to maintain vigilance. The region has been a hotbed of insurgency against Indian rule, with many residents advocating for independence or merger with Pakistan.

While Modi’s visit is seen as part of his election campaign ahead of national polls, it also highlights the ongoing tensions in the region. The government’s efforts to reshape Kashmir have faced resistance, with concerns raised about civil liberties and media freedom.

Despite the Supreme Court upholding the 2019 decision, Kashmir remains a deeply divided region, with India and Pakistan both claiming it in its entirety. The conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.
