CALGARY, Canada (Diya TV) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Canada to attend the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta. His visit comes at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, marking Modi’s sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 and his first visit to Canada in a decade.
Modi landed in Calgary on Monday evening. His stop in Canada is part of a broader three-nation tour that began in Cyprus and will conclude in Croatia.
Shortly after landing, Modi shared his thoughts on social media. He said he would meet world leaders and share India’s views on global challenges. He also stressed that he would highlight the concerns of the Global South.
The 2025 G7 Summit is happening at a crucial time for international diplomacy. Conflicts between Israel and Iran have intensified in recent weeks. At the same time, the Russia-Ukraine war continues with no end in sight. As a result, the summit is drawing worldwide attention.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also attending the gathering. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump left the summit early. The White House announced he returned to Washington to address pressing domestic matters. This comes after Trump declined to support a joint appeal for peace between Iran and Israel.
This year’s G7 agenda includes global security, energy transition, and digital infrastructure. Modi will address these topics during the G7 Outreach session on Tuesday morning. He is expected to outline India’s efforts in clean energy, infrastructure development, and digital access.
In addition, Modi will hold several bilateral meetings with fellow leaders on the sidelines of the summit. These discussions are likely to cover regional security, trade, and future cooperation.
India is not a G7 member. However, it has become a regular guest at G7 Outreach sessions. In fact, this year marks India’s 12th participation since 2003. As the fifth-largest economy, India now plays a key role in shaping global policies that impact the developing world.
Furthermore, Modi is using the platform to raise the voice of the Global South. He plans to advocate for fair access to technology, finance, and energy. According to officials, his focus is on inclusive and sustainable growth for emerging economies.
The Indian Prime Minister’s visit comes at a delicate moment in India–Canada relations. In October 2024, diplomatic tensions escalated following the killing of pro-Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India rejected Canada’s allegations of involvement and responded by expelling several Canadian diplomats. Canada, in turn, expelled Indian diplomats.
Now, with Mark Carney’s new government in office, both sides appear open to restoring ties. Carney’s invitation to Modi signals a shift toward reconciliation. Modi’s last visit to Canada in 2015 had elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.
Meanwhile, national security remains a key theme at the summit. India’s recent Operation Sindoor, launched in May, targeted terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The mission followed a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22.
As a result, Modi is expected to raise security concerns in his private meetings. Sources say India wants to build broader support for counter-terrorism cooperation.
After the G7 Summit, Modi will travel to Croatia. This marks the final leg of his four-day, three-nation tour. Each stop on this journey reflects India’s strategy to deepen global partnerships and promote its foreign policy goals.
