NEW YORK (Diya TV) — The New York City mayoral race Democratic primary is heating up, with Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani becoming a strong challenger to former Governor Andrew Cuomo and incumbent Mayor Eric Adams. The challengers have both been successful in fundraising.
Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist Assemblyman from Queens’ 36th Assembly District, announced he raised around $845,000 in the last two months with more than 16,000 individual donors.
Cuomo, who jumped into the mayoral race on March 1, has raised more than $1.5 million in only 13 days, bringing in the support of 2,821 donors.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams’ campaign, in contrast, has raised only $36,121 from 42 contributors in the last reporting cycle.
Other contenders, including City Comptroller Brad Lander and former Comptroller Scott Stringer, have also shown significant fundraising success. Lander collected around $3.7 million in public matching funds, while Stringer raised about $692,000.
Current polling reveals a competitive environment. A Quinnipiac University survey has Cuomo ahead with 31% among registered Democratic voters, followed by Mayor Adams with 11% and Mamdani with 8%. A more recent poll by Honan Strategy Group indicates Mamdani’s support increased to 12%, which reflects his increasing popularity.
Mamdani is the son of famed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair.
