PLYMOUTH, Mass. (Diya TV) — A Massachusetts judge declared a mistrial Friday in the murder case against former nurse Lindsay Clancy after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict.
Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan dismissed the jury after more than 35 hours of deliberations.
Clancy is charged in the January 2023 deaths of her three children. Prosecutors argue she was criminally responsible for the killings, while her attorneys contend she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and could not control her actions.
Clancy has pleaded not guilty.
The jury reported being deadlocked during deliberations. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington asked Sullivan to remove one juror, arguing that the juror was not applying the legal standard of reasonable doubt.
Sullivan denied the request after questioning jurors about whether they understood reasonable doubt and could follow the court’s instructions. Each juror said they could.
The panel later informed the court that it remained unable to reach a verdict, prompting Sullivan to declare a mistrial.
Reddington said the defense would seek a new trial as soon as possible.
Clancy did not testify during the trial.
According to evidence presented in court, Clancy killed her three children on Jan. 24, 2023, before jumping from a second-story window. She survived but suffered serious injuries and now uses a wheelchair.
Her defense focused on her mental health treatment following the birth of her youngest child, including a stay at a psychiatric hospital.
The mistrial leaves the charges unresolved. Prosecutors may retry the case, and Clancy remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
