WASHINGTON (Diya TV) — Vice President JD Vance drew attention on social media after he joked about Second Lady Usha Vance’s shopping skills when her discounted maternity dress became a topic of public discussion.

The exchange started after Usha Vance shared the receipt for a coral maternity dress from Old Navy that cost her only $8.75 after discounts and a coupon. Soon afterward, JD Vance praised her bargain-hunting skills with a lighthearted post on X.

“She bought a $50 dress for $8.75. America: meet your next director of the federal budget!” the vice president wrote on June 25.

His comment followed growing online interest in the dress after The New York Times published a story that examined the public image of several pregnant women connected to President Donald Trump’s administration.

The article, written by chief fashion critic Vanessa Friedman, explored how the pregnancies of Usha Vance, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and Katie Miller, the wife of Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, have become part of the administration’s broader public image.

According to Friedman, the three women present what she described as a consistent picture of the White House’s focus on family and fertility. She also wrote that Usha Vance’s public appearances during her pregnancy help make the vice president’s role more personal and relatable.

However, Usha Vance responded with humor instead of criticism. On June 24, she posted on X about the attention surrounding her wardrobe.

“Now that we know the political significance of my $8.75 coral maternity dress from Old Navy, can’t wait to hear what the New York Times has to say about my elastic-waistband pants and compression socks!” she wrote.

She then encouraged followers to enjoy her pregnancy fashion, “or lack thereof,” and invited families to watch “Storytime with the Second Lady.”

To support her comments, Usha Vance shared the purchase receipt for the dress. The receipt showed the maternity dress originally carried a price of $44.99. A store discount lowered the price to $12.49. Then, an additional coupon reduced the final cost to $8.75.

Soon after the post gained attention, the coral maternity dress became unavailable on the Old Navy website.

The dress first appeared publicly during a Father’s Day edition of “Storytime with the Second Lady,” which aired on June 21. During the event, JD Vance read stories from Winnie the Pooh while Usha Vance joined the family-focused program.
