BETHESDA, Md. (Diya TV) — Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance have welcomed their fourth child, marking a rare moment in American political history. Their son, Alec Neel Vance, was born Sunday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. As a result, JD Vance became the first sitting U.S. vice president in more than 150 years to welcome a child while serving in office.
The couple shared the news in a joint statement on July 20. They said both Usha Vance and the baby are healthy and doing well. They also said their three older children are excited to meet their new baby brother.
“We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother,” the statement said.
The announcement carried the official seal of the vice president of the United States. Both JD Vance and Usha Vance signed the statement. In addition, the couple thanked the doctors and medical staff who cared for their family during the birth.
“The incredible military doctors and staff members of Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit have been a blessing. We are deeply thankful for all they have done for our family,” they said.
Alec Neel Vance is the fourth child of the vice president and second lady. He joins his older brothers, Ewan, 9, and Vivek, 6, along with his sister, Mirabel, 4. The Vance family has generally kept their children away from public attention.
Their youngest child before Alec arrived in December 2021. At that time, JD Vance was running for the U.S. Senate in Ohio. Later, in January, the couple announced they were expecting another son.
According to historical records, the last known sitting vice president to welcome a child was Schuyler Colfax. His son, Schuyler Colfax III, was born in 1870 during his term. Before that, Vice President John C. Calhoun welcomed a son, William, in 1829.
JD Vance, 41, took office as vice president earlier this year. He also became the third-youngest person ever sworn into the position.
Meanwhile, Usha Vance has spoken openly in the past about family life. During an interview last year, she was asked whether she and her husband planned to have more children. At the time, she responded with a smile, saying, “Never say never.”
Usha Vance, born Usha Bala Chilukuri, is the daughter of Indian immigrants. She grew up in California, while her family traces its roots to Andhra Pradesh in southern India.
JD Vance and Usha Vance first met while studying at Yale Law School. They later married in 2014 and have built their family while pursuing successful legal and political careers.
