NEW DELHI (Diya TV) — Indian airports faced massive disruption this week after IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, cancelled more than 1,200 flights. The crisis left thousands of passengers stranded across major cities and triggered widespread complaints online. The airline blamed a mix of technical issues, bad weather, and new crew rules for the continuing meltdown.

IndiGo said the cancellations stemmed from “unforeseen operational challenges.” The airline admitted that its operations have been “significantly disrupted” since Dec. 1. As of Dec. 3, the carrier had cancelled 1,232 flights. The number of delays remained unclear.

Company officials said the situation became worse after new pilot and crew rostering rules came into effect last month. The rules increase rest periods for aviation staff. They aim to improve safety for passengers and reduce fatigue among crew. IndiGo said the new schedule system created a “negative compounding impact” on operations, which slowed recovery efforts.

The airline also faced technical glitches in its systems. Adverse weather conditions across several regions added to the delays. “We are working to restore our schedule as quickly as possible,” IndiGo said in a statement. India’s aviation regulator ordered an investigation into the disruptions and demanded a plan from the airline. Officials asked IndiGo to explain the reasons behind the delays and to outline how it planned to stabilize operations.

The watchdog also directed the airline to provide timely assistance to passengers. Many customers said they had received little help at airports. Some shared their experiences on X, formerly Twitter. One user described “complete mayhem” at an airport where delays stretched up to eight hours. The user also said there was “no staff” to guide stranded travelers.

The cancellations triggered severe crowding at airports across the country. Passengers scrambled to rebook flights or request refunds. IndiGo said it was offering new travel options and refunds to affected customers. However, many travelers said the airline did not provide clear communication about their flights. Long waiting times added to the frustration. Several passengers said they waited hours without receiving updates. Others said they only learned of their cancelled flights after reaching the airport.

The latest crisis comes just a week after another major setback for the airline. Airbus issued an alert for an urgent software upgrade for nearly 6,000 aircraft worldwide. The alert affected around 200 IndiGo planes. The airline had to update its systems, which added pressure on its operations. IndiGo has long been known for punctuality and efficiency. The current disruption marks one of its biggest operational challenges in years.

The flight chaos comes at a time when India is experiencing rapid growth in air travel. The country recorded 500,000 daily flyers last month for the first time. The milestone reflects India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. Industry analysts said the latest disruptions highlight the strain airlines face as demand surges. They also noted the importance of ensuring enough staffing and technical reliability during peak travel seasons.

IndiGo said it is working to return to normal operations. The airline continues to adjust crew schedules and resolve technical issues. It also said it is cooperating with regulators and will share updates with passengers. Still, many travelers remain uncertain about their upcoming flights. Airports across major hubs, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, continue to feel the impact of the cancellations.
