TOLEDO, Ohio (Diya TV) — Indian American executive Shankh Mitra has joined the list of the world’s highest-paid corporate leaders after receiving a compensation package worth $821 million. The annual ranking by The Wall Street Journal placed the Welltower CEO second among chief executives of S&P 500 companies. Only Tesla CEO Elon Musk ranked higher with a reported compensation package of $158.4 billion.

The massive pay package has drawn global attention, highlighting the growing use of performance-based rewards for top corporate leaders. The award reflects investor confidence in Mitra’s long-term leadership at Welltower, a real estate investment company focused on healthcare properties.

Almost all of Mitra’s compensation depends on the company’s future performance. According to The Wall Street Journal, nearly 99% of his total package came through stock grants instead of cash. The largest part of the award included equity grants worth $789 million that Welltower approved in October.

By the end of the year, the company said the value of those shares had already crossed $1 billion because of the rise in Welltower’s stock price. However, Mitra cannot receive the full benefit immediately. Instead, the award includes strict long-term performance conditions.

About half of the shares will vest in 2031 if Mitra remains with the company. Meanwhile, the remaining shares depend on Welltower increasing its market value by 45% over five years. The company must also outperform several major stock market indexes during that period.

The report noted that executive compensation increased sharply in 2025. More chief executives earned pay packages worth over $100 million than in any year since 2021. As a result, Mitra’s award became one of the largest compensation packages granted to the leader of a public company during the past decade.

Mitra’s career reflects a steady rise through the financial and investment sectors. He was born and raised in India. He completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering from Jadavpur University before moving to the United States for higher studies. Later, he earned an MBA in Applied Value Investing from Columbia Business School.

He started his professional journey at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Soon after, he moved into investment management and built expertise in real estate investing. Over the years, he held senior investment roles at Fidelity Investments, Citadel Investment Group, and Millennium Management.

At Millennium Management, Mitra managed a team that focused on commercial real estate companies and investment portfolios. The team handled company analysis, stock selection, portfolio management, and risk control. As a result, he gained strong experience in the real estate investment sector before entering corporate leadership.

Mitra joined Welltower in 2016 as Senior Vice President of Finance and Investments. He quickly moved into larger leadership roles. First, he became Head of Investments. Later, he served as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Investment Officer. Finally, the company appointed him as Chief Executive Officer in October 2020.

Since taking charge, Mitra has focused on expanding Welltower’s healthcare real estate portfolio while improving shareholder value. His latest compensation package directly links his rewards to the company’s future growth. Therefore, much of his potential earnings will depend on long-term business success rather than short-term results.
