CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Diya TV) — While thousands of students across India took to the streets to protest recent days against that nation’s controversial new citizenship law, hundreds of students — many of whom are originally from India — protested on college campuses in New England. Students from Harvard, MIT and Tufts, among others, held solidarity protests with students in India. With unrest continuing and attention from around the globe growing, the Indian government is trying to make it clear this new law offering citizenship to non-Muslims from three neighbouring countries, does not affect existing Indian Muslim citizens. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah said “the entire opposition is trying to mislead the population. I am saying again that nobody’s citizenship will be taken away.” Home Ministry officials add there’s a plan to provide Indian citizenship to all future migrants, including Muslims, “if found eligible.”
