ORLANDO, Fla. (Diya TV) — Akshay Bhatia stood on the 18th green at Arnold Palmer Invitational and looked into the sky. A rainbow stretched across the course at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge. In that quiet moment, the PGA Tour golfer thought of someone he had lost.
“When I saw that rainbow on 18, it reminded me of her,” Bhatia said.
The victory that followed was more than a career milestone. It was a tribute to his late niece, Mia, who died in December. Bhatia dedicated the emotional win to her memory.
Bhatia captured the biggest title of his career on Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida. The 22-year-old Indian American golfing prodigy defeated Daniel Berger in a playoff after a dramatic comeback during the final round. The win earned Bhatia $4 million and marked his first victory at a PGA Tour signature event.
He started the final round two shots behind the leaders. Bhatia stayed patient throughout the day and delivered strong shots when it mattered most. His steady play forced a playoff with Berger. On the first playoff hole, Bhatia sealed the victory with a clutch performance under pressure.
Moments later, his wife, Presleigh Bhatia, joined him on the 18th green as he celebrated the win. But the celebration quickly turned emotional as he shared the story behind his motivation.
Bhatia said he played the tournament with his niece Mia in his heart. Mia was the daughter of Bhatia’s sister, Rhea Bhatia. She had been diagnosed with a rare disease as a baby. Doctors once told the family she might not live past her first year.
But Mia showed incredible strength. She continued to fight the illness and remained a bright presence in the family’s life. She even attended Bhatia’s wedding, which meant a lot to the golfer and his family. Tragically, Mia passed away on the same day as the wedding.
The loss deeply affected Bhatia. He said he has thought about her constantly since December. During the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the rainbow over the 18th hole reminded him of Mia. He later told his sister that the moment felt like a sign. Bhatia said the win was for her.
In December, Bhatia posted a heartfelt tribute to Mia on Instagram. He described her as having “the best hair, the best smile, and being one of the strongest kids I know.” He promised to honor her memory every day.
“I will cherish her and play for her every single day,” he wrote in the post dated Dec. 13.
Bhatia also shared details about Mia’s final days. She stayed at a place the family called “Heaven on Earth,” where the wedding ceremony took place. She enjoyed playing in the sand and spending time with relatives. The family created special memories together during those final moments. For Bhatia, those memories remain a source of strength.
Bhatia’s win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational continued his impressive rise on the PGA Tour. The victory marked the third PGA Tour title of his young career. He first won the Barracuda Championship in July 2023. He followed that with another victory at the Valero Texas Open in April 2024. All three of his PGA Tour wins came in playoffs. That pattern highlights his ability to perform under intense pressure.
Bhatia also praised the legacy of Arnold Palmer after his win. He noted Palmer’s impact on the game and the community. He said Bay Hill remains one of the toughest tests on the tour. The challenging layout demands precision and mental strength.
Bhatia will now shift his focus to the next big event on the schedule, the Players Championship. The tournament begins next week and features many of the top golfers in the world. With momentum from his Bay Hill victory, Bhatia enters the event with confidence. Still, he made it clear that Sunday’s win meant more than any prize money or ranking points.
