NEW YORK (Diya TV) — The International Society of Nephrology has named Indian American physician Dr. Jai Radhakrishnan as the next editor-in-chief of Kidney International, one of the world’s leading nephrology journals. Radhakrishnan will succeed Pierre Ronco, who has led the journal since 2018 and will retire from the role on Dec. 31, 2026.

The appointment marks a major milestone in global kidney research and highlights the growing influence of Indian American physicians in academic medicine. Radhakrishnan currently serves as editor-in-chief of Kidney International Reports, a sister publication within the International Society of Nephrology’s journal portfolio.

Radhakrishnan is a professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. He is widely recognized for his work in nephrology, the branch of medicine focused on kidney health and disease. The International Society of Nephrology said Radhakrishnan helped expand Kidney International Reports into a leading, fully open-access nephrology journal. The society also praised his editorial experience, leadership skills, and commitment to improving kidney care worldwide.

“Dr. Radhakrishnan is an outstanding choice to lead Kidney International,” ISN President Marcello Tonelli said in a statement.

“His editorial expertise, global perspective, and dedication to advancing high-quality science and clinical research will ensure the journal continues to thrive and evolve,” Tonelli added. “We are confident in his ability to build on KI’s strong foundations and further strengthen its impact for the global kidney community.”

Radhakrishnan said he feels honored to take on the leadership role at the prestigious medical journal.

“I am deeply honored to take on the role of editor-in-chief of Kidney International,” he said.

He also praised Ronco’s leadership during the past several years.

“Following in the footsteps of Dr. Ronco, whose leadership has been instrumental in shaping the journal over the past decade, is both a privilege and a responsibility,” Radhakrishnan said.

He added that he plans to continue supporting innovative kidney research and improving patient care around the world.

“I look forward to serving the global nephrology community by building on this strong legacy and continuing to advance innovative, high-impact research that informs and improves kidney care worldwide,” he said.

Ronco has served as editor-in-chief since 2018. During his tenure, the journal strengthened its reputation as one of the most respected publications in kidney disease research and clinical nephrology.

As the flagship journal of the International Society of Nephrology, the journal plays a central role in sharing scientific discoveries with doctors, researchers, and healthcare professionals worldwide.
