STANFORD, Calif.  (Diya TV) — Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan emphasized the critical need for continued political engagement and activism during the inaugural Stanford India Dialogue at Stanford University. Addressing a diverse audience that included academics and students, Thanedar highlighted the importance of fixing America’s broken immigration system to maintain its technological edge and innovation prowess.

“We’re witnessing a loss of skilled immigrant workforce to countries like Canada and Australia due to our flawed immigration system,” Congressman Thanedar remarked. “I’m advocating for changes in Congress to create more opportunities and ensure America remains competitive in technology and innovation.”

He elaborated on his efforts to reform the immigration system, citing initiatives to increase the number of H-1B visas and eliminate country quotas for advanced degree holders. Thanedar stressed that skilled workers play a crucial role in driving productivity and GDP growth, emphasizing the necessity of retaining talent within the United States.

Reflecting on his own journey from facing visa rejections in Mumbai to becoming a congressman, Thanedar underscored his unwavering support for Hinduism, India, and fostering strong India-United States relations. He expressed pride in his immigrant background and urged the Indian American community to actively engage in politics and civic issues.

Thanedar cautioned against passivity in the face of hate and bigotry, urging proactive involvement in shaping political discourse and advocating for the community’s interests. He emphasized the need for coordination and resilience, rejecting the notion that peacefulness equates to weakness.

“Inactive response to discrimination is not the solution. We must actively participate in politics and civic engagement,” Congressman Thanedar asserted. “Indian Americans have prominent figures in politics, including Vice President Kamala Harris, but we must remain focused and vigilant to ensure our voices are heard and our concerns addressed.”
